(Voice of Paul) – Abraham Maslow was an American social scientist credited with the creation of the Hierarchy of Human Needs. At the base, he added basic things of life such as food, water, and housing, and at the peak of the hierarchy was self-actualization. Western countries religiously embraced this theory and made it the bedrock of their societies. In Germany, the federal government ensures that its citizens have access to food, water, shelter, jobs, and warmth, and if a citizen is incapable of getting a job or incapable of working due to biological constraints, such citizen would be placed on a monthly stipend that would enable the citizen to pay for house rent, food, water, and other basic needs.

However, comparing societies in the sub-Saharan part of Africa, what we have is a different story. Why has the Nigerian government been constructing roads for decades upon decades but still could not fix the basic human needs, if the road construction projects are not effortless ways to siphon public funds into their pockets? – and it does not even end there – political leaders would still give the contract of road construction to foreigners as if there were no fully Nigerian construction companies that would execute the job. The current astronomical increase in the prices of staple foods in Nigeria is an eyesore to all the political leaders in Nigeria. With an abundance of arable lands viable for farming all the crops that we eat in our country, what we have instead is a large swathe of land occupied by weeds and unwanted plantations. How is it difficult for the Nigerian government to secure some hectares of land in each state, fund, farm, and secure it? Why does every problem have to be solved with importation?
If you had the chance to become Nigeria’s elected president for three months, how would you transform the country?
