(Voice of Paul) – On one of my trips, I had a connecting flight at Cairo, Egypt and when we landed after more than six hours of flight at a scary altitude of 34,000 ft, we eventually landed and I had a sigh of relief, it was comforting to know we landed safely, however, something struck my attention, while the plane was in taxi mode for like 15 minutes roaming inside the airport and finding where it would hang, I noticed a fleet of commercial airplanes, hanging in their positions on different sides of the airport. But something was more striking, it was the presence of the EgyptAir logo on almost 98% of all the commercial airplanes that I saw there and the reality set in for me that Nigeria with an enormous population that exceeds 220 million people does not have a national airline.

I have been a Nigerian for more than 30 years, and I have no idea what it feels like to enjoy a national airline as a Nigerian. I am certain that Egyptian citizens would be able to get kind of benefits in the form of subsidies, redeemable coupons, and promotions that would make the cost of their flight to be lower than non-Egyptians.

It is more than shameful that the leaders we have in our country are mainly after their own pockets, ego-centric and only serve the interests of outsiders. How gullible is it that the Nigerian government cannot single-handedly run an airline company successfully? The combined population of #United Arab Emirates, #Qatar, #Oman, #Saudi Arabia, #Bahrain is less than 70 million people and yet the economic value of their national airlines combined is in scores of billions of USD dollars.
